Welcome Back!!!! Our 2012-2013 school year is going to be a great one. I hope that everyone feels like they are settling back into a routine and things are going smoothly. Here at school it feels like we never left. We have welcomed new members to our room (Welcome 2nd graders!), and our 3rd graders are adjusting to thier new roles as "the old kids." :) I am excited about what this year will bring!

Career Projects
Everyone did a great job on thier projects and presentations for Mrs. Lloyd. Here is Kennedy's presentation. Great job!
Thomas Edison Song
Students are currently in the process of writing thier "Famous Person" report. Each child had the choice of writing thier report on Thomas Edison, Paul Revere, or Sally Ride. They are using information from our booklets we used in class to write thier reports. These booklets had lots of interesting information, but they also had fun activities and songs to go with each person. Here is an example of one of the songs we sang. So funny. :)

AR Class Goal and Rewards

Our class is so excited about our class library renovation. I want to give a big thank you to Paula Lyddane and Valerie Sewell for making our library more AR accessible. :) The kids are really excited about AR and have been much more motivated to read. Our class has been faced with the challenge of reaching a class goal of 50 points this 9 weeks! If we reach our goal the reward will be a movie and popcorn party. (The movie will be Because of Winn Dixie, which is a book we read together in class.) Mrs. Lyddane then challenged students further. If we reach 75 points we will also earn pizza, and if the students reach 100 points...ice cream! Talk about excited! The kids are reading like never before. lol! Don't forget to encourage your child at home to read and talk to them about AR tests that they have taken!

This Friday students will have a quiz where they will locate the seven continents and 4 oceans. Maps to study with should have been in your child's binder yesterday. Students will also be responsible for knowing the location of the United States, Canada, and Mexico on a map of North America. We will be reviewing this material each day at school, but please have your student study in an effort to be prepared for Friday.

E-communications
With January always comes the chance of snow. I say this both with dread and excitement. :) I would encourage everyone to sign up for E-communications on our district website to be alerted of snow days or if we are released early from school. Other important school information will also be communicated to you this way.

Pop Top Drive

We are asking all families to start collecting pop tops from soda cans to donate on the 100th day of school. Our goal is for each student to bring in 100 pop tops to donate to the Ronald McDonald House Charities. This charity is dear to Mrs. Monroe, whose family was able to stay in the Ronand McDonald House while her baby grandson was hospitalized after being born. So encourage frineds and family to keep those pop tops! Right now, the 100th day of school would be January 19!
